Contrary to what I initially thought, this is not, wholly, a 400 year old Basilica. First off, it was built on an existing parish church, which dates back to 1658. Second, its considered a rounds, since it's completely round, and was never given tge status of basilica, by the roman Catholic church.

Impressive church, lady in museum will provide a history for you, then 3 euros for the lift to the top followed by about 100 steps up a metal spiral staircase to the top of the bell tower, worth the climb but not for the unfit or vertiginous.

This is the biggest church in Gozo and boasts the third largest unsupported dome in the world. Ix-Xewkija is one of the oldest villages of Gozo and took the status of a parish as early as 1678. Years later a parish church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was erected, and consecrated in 1755. After the 2nd World War, the parishioners – traditionally known for their building skills and craftsmanship in Maltese stone – expressed their wish to construct a new and majestic Parish Church. Architect Joseph D’Amato drew up the plans inspired by the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Della Salute in Venice.

Another hidden gem. As its sited off the main road, you have to make a conscious effort to visit this church which is actually a unique combination of 2 churches! A baroque chapel built into a larger Church.. Apart from the fascinating interiors where photos are allowed, you can also take a lift to the upper ramparts and get a great view of the surrounding countryside. Cost €3 a pop for this elevated view but take it as a donation to the church.

Fantastic historical church. Beautiful inside and out. Make sure to visit the back side where you find pictures and remains of the old, original church. Use the elevator to go up towards the top and take the extra cca. 100 spiral stairs to the bell tower. The view is magnificent. You get really close to the bells. Quite fascinating.
